May 2-6, 2019

for vocalists or instrumentalists who arrange for singers

This intensive workshop offers insights and guidance especially focused for those artists who want to prepare to record. Sessions on song selection, arranging, rhythmic fluency, and the studio recording process will all help you in this most important phase of a successful recording project-the preparation!

The ‘big picture’ principles of Laurence’s teaching will be present - essentially that relaxed mindfulness is the key. It feeds the greatest secret Laurence has come to believe regarding musical evolution: the way our egos want to learn music is not the way our brains want to learn music. We can learn to re-calibrate our source of gratification from a quick-fix approach — instant gratification, little evolution or improvement — to a deeper, more contemplative way of working that leads to steadier and more marked growth. The result is real, lasting gratification that translates in performance.

with Marilena Anzini and Nicoline Snaas

for singers

Sing and play help us to feel better reducing stress level and negative thoughts and developing our attitude toward joy and amazement. Both of them are ritual and link to repetition. Children can repeat thousand times the same game without get boring: they always find something new and exciting in it, every single time. Develop the same approach and attitude toward ourselves and our voice could be an occasion to find joy and innocence in singing, to experience a deeper envolvement and a more authentic self expression in singing and in life. Nicoline and Marilena are very experienced singers and singing teachers that have been working together for almost 10 years. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to experience their global approach to singing, a balanced mix of experiences of Functional Voice Training (for a deeper relation with body and voice), vocal improvisation (to develop more freedom in self expression) and choral singing (to join the connection between more and different voices when they sing together).

September 26-30, 2019

for singers

Bob’s comprehensive workshop will give singers the skills to hear and understand the music they are singing!
Develop rhythmic, melodic, harmonic and stylistic skills so you can quickly contribute to any singing situation with confidence.

A contemporary singer is asked to do many things. Of course, singing solos is important- and the skills you learn in this workshop can support your solo singing-especially if you improvise. But even if you do not improvise - having the opportunity to isolate musical elements and practice them with Bob - this will make you a better singer in all styles -in all settings. Sing every day - all day to develop your own library full of new vocabulary, articulations, rhythmic grooves, bass lines, and harmonic options so when asked to be part of a circle singing event, or asked to be part of a backup group, or invited to sing harmonies with a duo partner, or given the nod with the band to take a solo break you will be able to sing with joy and confidence. Every singer wants to have something beautiful to offer. This takes practice. Bob will teach you how to transform rhythmic ideas into melodic phrases by adding pitches to your own improvised rhythms. Everyone will benefit from an opportunity to practice with Bob's guidance and expertise.  Participants will enjoy singing to a variety of contemporary grooves including R&B, Funk, Swunk (swing 16ths), Latin, Reggae and Fusion.

October 3-7, 2019

with Richard Scofano and Alfredo Minetti

for singers and instrumentalists

This workshop is designed for instrumentalists and singers interested in the ways of Argentine tango and chamamé. The music of Argentina is incredibly rich and diverse.  Composers and interpreters like Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Lalo Schifrin, Ariel Ramirez, Mercedes Sosa, and Martha Argerich, just to name a few, have been cultural ambassadors of Argentine throughout the world from the beginning of the 20th century.

In our time together, we will explore aspects of this vast musical legacy with a strong emphasis on performance and communication. In 2009 tango was added to UNESCO’s intangible heritage list, and it looks like the same is about to happen with the chamamé. We will concentrate on stylistic and performative aspects of those two genres.

Participants will receive a list of the repertoire (scores, lyrics, and recordings) that we will work with during the workshop. We will use this set of pieces to discuss history and tradition, and to address style, technique, interpretation, and, ultimately, performance.  Next, we will proceed to work with the repertoire.
All participants should take the time to familiarize themselves with all the pieces selected for the workshop.

The workshop will open with an introduction to the concept of Duende – a concept brought to Argentina by the Spanish and that is present in all its music – as a means to understand the depth and intensity necessary to perform such music.

October 31 - November 4, 2019
